Running 5 Kilometers Every Day

I am 53 going to 54 in Nov would like to assure myself. I RUN AND CYCLE every day. I run 45 minutes and complete 5k 5 times a week. Is that safe? I feel good but I am not sure of my safety. Am I taking health risks? If I am, please answer my question.

Answer by Dominique:

Hi there,
Thanks for your running training question. What you are doing sounds like a healthy exercise regime.

Now, I don't know what you have been doing in the past, how long you have been doing your current running training, what your health history is etc. Above all, I am not a doctor!

If this is something you have been doing for a long, long time, i.e. you are used to it, then there should not be any health risks associated with your current activity.

On the contrary, there is so much evidence available that tells us that regular moderate exercise (4-6 times a week for at least 30 minutes) is actually very, very good for us.

If this is something you have only been doing for a very short time, something you have jumped into, then there may be some reason for concerns. Please check out my beginner running tip no. 2 on my Beginner Running Tips-page.

Regardless of how used you are to this, at a certain age, regular doctor visits and check-ups never hurt. If you have any concerns, aches or pains, go see a doctor. Even if it is only to put your worries to rest!

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Dominique
