You've got a goal pace written down, but no real plan for how to actually distribute it across 13.1 miles once the gun goes off. For most runners, even splits or a slight negative split win — not the dramatic negative split some advice pushes. Go out 10-15 seconds per mile slower than goal pace for the first 2 miles, settle into goal pace by mile 3, and try to hold or gain time in the final 5K. Positive splits — going out hard and hanging on — is the most common mistake among new half marathoners, and it rarely produces a best time. The runners walking by mile 10 rarely blew up at mile 10 — the damage was done in mile 2, when an unvalidated number and a bit of adrenaline talked them into going out too hard. Get the plan right before the gun goes off, because you won't get a second chance to fix it mid-race.
Validate Your Goal Pace: Triangulate, Don't Guess
Most pace calculators give you one number from one input and call it done. That's not enough to trust on race morning. I have athletes cross-check a calculated goal pace against three separate data points before they lock it in.
First, your recent race-time equivalent — take your 10K pace and add 15-30 seconds per mile. Second, your sustained tempo-workout pace, from something like 3 x 15 minutes at continuous effort. Third, your controlled-effort long-run pace, run honestly rather than pushed.
Here's the disagreement rule I use: if all three land within 10 seconds per mile of each other, trust the number and build your race plan around it. If your tempo pace is more than 15 seconds per mile slower than the calculated goal, recalibrate the goal down — the tempo number is telling you something the calculator can't see.
Course-Specific Pacing Adjustments
Flat-course goal pace is a starting point, not a fixed number — the course itself changes what's achievable. On a net-climbing course, add roughly 15-20 seconds per mile for every 100ft (30m) of net climb across the race.
On a net-downhill course, cap your early pace gains at 10-15 seconds per mile faster than flat-course goal pace. Your quads pay for early downhill speed after mile 10, and that bill always comes due. On a technical or twisty course, run the first mile by effort rather than GPS pace — the tight turns will make your watch lie to you anyway.
My specific guidance to athletes tackling an early climb: run the first hill 10-15 seconds per mile slower than flat-course goal pace. Most runners under-respect this rule and pay for it after mile 10, when the debt comes due on tired legs.
Racing in the Heat: A Quick Adjustment
Heat changes your achievable pace more than most runners want to admit. Above 60°F (15°C) with humidity, slow your goal pace by roughly 3-4% for every 5°F above that threshold. That's not a suggestion to ignore on a warm race morning — it's the physiology talking.

What to Do When Your Pacing Plan Falls Apart Mid-Race
This is the part no other page goes past "focus on the current mile" for. I give athletes a genuine decision tree, keyed to exactly how far off pace they are and at what mile — because the right response is different depending on both.
Off by under 10 seconds per mile at mile 8 — hold your effort and ignore the number, it's noise. Off by 20-30 seconds per mile by miles 8-10 — abandon the original pace goal and switch to time-banking against a realistic finish-time range instead of a single number. Off by 45+ seconds per mile, or if you're experiencing sharp pain or dizziness — shift to a finish-strong or run-walk fallback, 30 seconds walking per mile, to complete safely.
One of my athletes was 25 seconds per mile off her sub-2 pace by mile 9. Rather than fighting to regain lost time, she'd pre-agreed a "plan B" finish window with me before the race, and calmly switched targets mid-race. She banked a 3-minute personal best anyway.
GPS Watch Pacing Pitfalls
Your GPS watch is a tool, not an oracle, and it fails in three specific, predictable ways. Instant-pace lag is the first — use lap or average pace instead, especially in mile 1, when instant pace bounces around too much to trust.
Tree cover and urban-canyon satellite drift is the second — expect up to 0.1-0.2 miles of cumulative watch-versus-course error over 13.1 miles, so trust the course's painted mile markers over your watch's distance when they disagree. Tunnels and bridges causing pace spikes is the third — ignore any single erratic reading and wait 20-30 seconds for the signal to stabilise before you react to it.
