Pacing Strategy for Hilly & Technical Half Marathons
Your goal race has real hills, and you're not sure whether to hold your flat-course goal pace on the climbs or let it slip. On a hilly course, run every mile at the same effort, not the same pace. A flat-course goal of 9:00/mile might mean 9:20-9:30 uphill and 8:45-8:50 downhill at identical effort — chasing the watch uphill is the single most common way hilly-course pacing plans fail. Effort is the constant; pace is the variable. Once that reframing sticks, hilly-course pacing stops being a fight against the terrain and becomes a straightforward application of a rule you already understand from easy runs — you just haven't applied it to race day before.
How Much to Slow Down (and Speed Up) by Grade
Here's the concrete number most hill-pacing advice skips, because most of it is written for marathon scale rather than half marathon effort. Add roughly 10-15 seconds per mile for every 100ft (30m) of climb over a mile, at half marathon race effort.

I've seen a runner bank 90 seconds on an early net-downhill 5K stretch, then lose three minutes to quad fatigue in the final 5K. The downhill felt free. It wasn't.

If feasible, run or drive the toughest two to three miles in person — nothing replaces seeing a climb with your own eyes. Write the planned effort, not pace, for each marked section directly onto a wearable race-belt card, so you're reading a plan under fatigue rather than trying to remember one.
Training Adjustments to Prepare for a Hilly or Technical Course
