Build a Personal Anti-Cramping Protocol For Repeat Crampers

The fix for repeat cramping is a test-and-log method: change one variable per long run — training fixes first, then sodium rate, then pacing, then pre-race loading — and only keep what proves out across two clean tests. Below: the four variables in priority order, the log format to use, and how to assemble your final race-day protocol.

You've probably tried more than one fix already — a different electrolyte brand, a slower start, new shoes — without ever being sure which one, if any, actually mattered. That's the real problem behind repeat cramping: changing several things at once and losing the signal for what worked. This only works once you already know your cramp type — testing without that diagnostic step wastes cycles. If you haven't done it yet, know your cramp type before you start testing.

The Four Variables Worth Testing, in Priority Order

The order here matters as much as the list itself, and it reflects a stance I'll say plainly: most repeat crampers over-focus on electrolyte products before ruling out fatigue mechanisms. Test in this sequence.

  1. Training-lever fixes first — goal-pace long runs and strength work from the training-lever variables to test first. Fatigue-type cramping is more common, and these address the root cause.
  2. Sodium intake rate — only relevant for electrolyte-type or hot-weather cramping. Deliberately vary it across two comparable long runs, for example 300mg/hour versus 600-700mg/hour.
  3. Pacing discipline — hold a stricter effort cap in the first half of a long run to see if reduced early fatigue delays or prevents cramp onset.
  4. Pre-race sodium loading — tested last, in the 24-48 hours before a long run or race, because it's the hardest variable to isolate cleanly.

Never test more than one of these per long run. Combine two and you're back to guessing.

The Testing Log: What to Record and How to Read It

The decision rule is strict on purpose: a variable only counts as "working" if it shows no cramping, or a clear severity or timing improvement, across at least two separate tests under comparable conditions. A single clean run is not evidence — cramping is inconsistent by nature, and one good long run proves nothing on its own.

Building the Final Race-Day Protocol

Once you've got two or more confirmed variables, assemble them into what you actually carry into race day: your confirmed training approach, a confirmed sodium intake rate with a specific product and dose (not just "more electrolytes"), a confirmed pacing plan for the first half, and a pre-race sodium-loading routine if that one tested positive too. Never add anything untested on race day itself — including a product someone else swears by, no matter how well it worked for them.

I had a repeat cramper test sodium rate alone for two full cycles with no improvement, then isolate pacing discipline as the actual fix — cramp-free for the next two marathons after slowing the first 10K by roughly 10-15 seconds a mile. The ones who keep cramping marathon after marathon are almost always the ones who changed three things between races and can't tell me which one mattered.
