Let's face it — a lot of mainstream running media treats "speed endurance" as a catch-all marketing term for any session that involves running fast. Fleet Feet-style listicles will happily call a fartlek run, a tempo run, or even a hard long run "speed endurance training" because it sounds technical and sells the article.
Here's a concrete example of the mislabeling: a fartlek session — say, 6 x 2 minutes hard within a continuous 40-minute run, jogging the recoveries at an easy pace without stopping — gets called speed endurance in plenty of articles. It fails the definition on two counts. The effort is continuous, not broken into discrete reps, and the "recovery" is a jog within the same unbroken run rather than a defined, incomplete rest period. It's a good session. It just isn't speed endurance.

Why the Distinction Actually Matters for Your Training
Substitute fartlek for true speed endurance and you lose the exact stimulus middle-distance racing depends on — tolerance to running hard with lactate already accumulated and no full recovery in sight. Fartlek is a genuinely useful session. It just doesn't teach your body what it feels like to hold pace when your legs are already loaded with lactate, because you never get there without a proper recovery period first.
I coached a masters 1500m runner who plateaued for an entire season doing twice-weekly fartlek, convinced it was her speed endurance work. Her aerobic fitness was fine. Her closing 400m in races kept falling apart the same way, every race. We swapped one fartlek session for true incomplete-recovery reps — 5 x 300m at 92% effort with 60 seconds rest — and her race times dropped inside six weeks. The fartlek hadn't been wasted, but it had never been what she needed to fix that specific problem.
Where Each Method Fits in a Training Week
Each method earns a specific role, not an interchangeable one. Tempo is your threshold day, building the aerobic ceiling underneath everything else. Fartlek suits an active-recovery or variety day, keeping legs turning over without the structure of a hard session. Hills are your strength-speed day, building power and economy through a different stimulus. Speed endurance is your race-specific quality day, the one directly rehearsing what a hard-fought 800m or 1500m finish actually demands.
Beware stacking more than one true speed-endurance session into a week if you're not racing at an elite level. Most non-elite middle-distance runners do well on no more than one speed-endurance session a week, alongside a tempo day and a lighter fartlek or hill day. It's a demanding session on your lactic system, and it needs the rest of the week free of comparable intensity to actually deliver its benefit.
