You've got a 10K coming up and you want the full picture — pacing, fuelling, tactics — in one place before you dive into any single piece of it. The single biggest mistake in 10K racing is going out too fast — and it costs more here than in almost any other common distance. A 10K is raced at lactate threshold effort, not VO2max, which means the speed you bank in the first two kilometres can't be spent and forgotten. It has to be repaid, with interest, somewhere in the second half. Why the 10K Isn't Just a Longer 5K
A 5K is raced close to VO2max — hard, but short enough that anaerobic capacity can paper over a pacing mistake. Pacing by Ability Level
A 35-minute runner and a 65-minute runner are not racing the same tactical problem, even over an identical course. The cluster works off four bands — 35, 45, 55 and 65-minute finishers — and the opening-kilometre discipline required changes sharply between them.
The 35-minute runner has almost zero margin for a fast start — threshold pace at that level is so close to genuine race-day limits that ten seconds lost early can mean thirty seconds paid back late. The 65-minute runner has considerably more room to correct a slightly quick opening kilometre without it wrecking the race. The Km 6-7 Discomfort Window
This is the one section on this page that gets real depth, because no other page on this site owns it. Somewhere around 60-70% of race distance — call it kilometre six to seven for most club runners — lactate accumulation typically outpaces clearance. This is where the race is actually decided.
I coach club runners who post 45-second-per-kilometre positive splits almost entirely inside this one-kilometre window — not because they lack fitness, but because they treat the first wave of discomfort as a signal to panic rather than a plateau to sit through. Two things help. First, a fixed mental cue: I have athletes count cadence for 30 strides, which pulls attention away from the discomfort and back onto form. Second, a pre-decided response rule — hold your current pace for 60 seconds rather than reacting immediately. The sensation plateaus far more often than it worsens, and reacting to the first wave almost always costs more than riding it out.

Studying the Course Before Race Day
Course recon is a lever most runners simply ignore, and it's a cheap one. It's not about glancing at a map the night before — it's about knowing, in advance, where the course will demand a decision from you.
