Warning Signs You're Progressing Too Fast The Objective Checklist
Watch three objective signals: resting heart rate elevated 5+ bpm above your baseline for 3+ consecutive mornings, long-run soreness that hasn't resolved within 48 hours, and two or more consecutive nights of disrupted sleep coinciding with the buildup. One signal alone is a caution — two or more together means stop and back off, not just note and monitor. You're mid-buildup, uneasy about how quickly your long run is climbing, or you've got a nagging symptom you can't quite place — and every generic "listen to your body" article leaves you no closer to knowing whether to push on or pull back.
Why These Three Signals — Not Just "Listen to Your Body"
Resting heart rate and sleep disruption work as objective autonomic-fatigue proxies precisely because they're not subjective — you can't talk yourself out of a number on a chest strap. Soreness itself is expected after a long run; that's normal training stress, not a red flag. The diagnostic signal is duration — 48+ hours — and trend, getting worse week over week rather than easing. Presence of soreness on its own tells you almost nothing useful.
What to Do When One Signal Shows Up: The Response Ladder
This is the part most guides skip — naming the symptom without saying what to actually do about it.

This overrides your calendar-based step-back-week schedule whenever the two conflict. I've watched runners keep advancing their long run through a single bad-sleep week because "it wasn't their step-back week yet" — and end up needing a full extra step-back week later to dig out of it. Freezing at one signal, rather than just noting it, is what prevents that spiral.

This distinction cuts both ways. I've coached a runner who mistook ordinary post-long-run soreness for an overtraining signal and needlessly repeated a step-back week she didn't need — missing real signals and over-reacting to normal fatigue both cost you training time, just in different directions.
