Marathon Taper Week Exact Workout Structure
Your last real marathon-pace workout of taper falls 12–13 days before race day — either 3–4 miles at marathon pace embedded in a longer run, or a 6–8 mile progression run finishing at marathon pace. The timing isn't arbitrary. Your body needs roughly 10 days to absorb a hard training stimulus, and if you push that final quality session any later, residual fatigue won't clear by race morning. Below, you'll find the exact session-by-session structure for a 3-week taper, how to compress it into 2 weeks, and why strides stay in every week regardless.
Every plan tells you mileage drops in these final weeks. What it rarely tells you is what to actually run in its place — and getting the timing wrong in either direction will cost you. Push that last quality session too late and you'll be carrying fatigue to the start line. Drop everything too early and you've burned a workout's worth of fitness for nothing. The trick is being precise, not just cautious.
Three-Week Taper: Session by Session
Week 3 — roughly 70–80% of your peak mileage. This is where your last quality session lives — 3–4 miles at marathon pace inside a longer easy run, or a 6–8 mile progression run finishing at marathon pace. Alongside that, you'll do one easy long run at a reduced distance. Nothing more. Let those two sessions do their work.
Week 2 — roughly 50–60% of your peak mileage. You're not done with marathon-pace running yet. Early in the week, run a 6–8 mile tempo at marathon pace. Mid-week, do 2×3 miles at marathon pace with a 3-minute rest between. Run strides twice this week — more on those below. Your easy running fills the rest of the mileage.
Week 1 (race week) — roughly 30–40% of your peak mileage. You're not training now; you're arriving. Run 2–4 shakeout runs of 3–5 miles each, with 4–6 strides embedded. No sustained marathon-pace work beyond 10–15 minutes total. Your last run should be 2 days before race day — short, easy, and purposeful.
Adapting for a 2-Week Taper
If you're working with 2 weeks rather than 3, collapse Week 3 and Week 2 of the structure above into a single week: one marathon-pace tempo of 6–8 miles roughly 10 days out, then straight into race-week volume — 30–40% of peak mileage — with strides throughout. The thing is, your last quality session still needs its roughly 10-day absorption window, so a 2-week taper can't start any later than 12–13 days out either. Your mileage drops faster, but the workout timing rule doesn't change. Not sure whether a 2- or 3-week taper suits you? Decide here first.
Why Strides Stay in Every Taper Week
Strides — short, controlled accelerations to near-race-pace effort, with full recovery between — keep your neuromuscular sharpness and running economy ticking over without adding meaningful fatigue or glycogen cost. Cutting them entirely is a common overcorrection, and it's one I'd urge you to avoid. My prescription: 4–6×20 seconds at goal marathon-pace effort — not sprint effort — with walk-back recovery, two to three times in the final 10 days.
I've watched athletes who cut strides entirely during taper report "dead legs" on race morning, versus those who kept two to three short stride sessions in and felt sharp from the gun. It's a small session with an outsized effect, and I correct it every time I see it dropped.
Know your marathon pace before you run any of these taper workouts — the sessions above only work if the pace target underneath them is accurate.
