800m Mileage by Training Phase A Scaled Framework for Low-Mileage Runners
Quick answer: most published 800m mileage guidance assumes a 60-70 mile base cut back to 35-40 for racing — not useful if you're capped at 20-40 miles a week. Use three scaled mileage tiers instead — 20-25, 25-32, and 32-40 miles per week — each with its own build, specific-prep, and race-phase numbers, roughly a 25-30% drop from build to race phase at your actual volume. Most low-mileage runners either try to force a high-mileage plan onto a 25-mile week and burn out in specific prep, or assume less volume means less structure and end up training on vibes. Neither works. This framework exists so you can plan a low-mileage season with the same rigor a 65-mile-a-week athlete gets, just scaled to what you're actually running.
Why the Standard 60-70-to-35-40 Framework Doesn't Fit
A runner who builds a 65-mile base has a large aerobic buffer to draw on — easy tempo capacity, fatigue resistance, a reservoir they can spend down as race phase sharpens speed. A runner who never gets past 30 miles doesn't have that reservoir. Cutting a 30-mile week by the same proportion the elite framework cuts a 65-mile week would leave you under-trained heading into your most important sessions. The ratio can hold. The absolute numbers need to be built for what you're actually running.
The Scaled Framework: Build Phase to Race Phase by Mileage Tier
This is the tiered framework I use with BRT athletes who can't or won't run 50+ miles a week. Find your tier, and use the ranges as your phase-by-phase targets.

Typical phase duration: build phase runs 8-10 weeks, specific prep 4-6 weeks, and race phase 4-8 weeks depending on how long your season lasts.
What Replaces the Aerobic Volume You're Not Running
You're not running the miles a high-mileage plan would give you, so something needs to fill that gap. Three categories do the work: cross-training sessions add aerobic stimulus without the pounding of extra running miles; tempo-effort strength circuits build the muscular endurance that easy mileage would otherwise develop; and an extra easy-effort session at slightly higher frequency spreads your existing volume more evenly across the week rather than piling it into fewer runs. Recognising When to Shift from Build to Race Phase
I look for three signals before I move a low-mileage athlete into race phase. Goal-pace intervals completed with full target recovery for two consecutive sessions — one clean session is often just a good day, two tells you something real. Your race calendar sitting inside six to eight weeks. And speed-endurance sessions no longer producing new PBs at your current volume, which tells me the training stimulus has done its job for this phase.

Does the Build Phase Need to Be as Long?
Generally, no — and shorter by design, not by compromise. An elite build phase runs 12-16 weeks because there's a large aerobic engine to construct. A low-mileage build phase can run 8-10 weeks, because there's less aerobic ground to cover and speed work can be introduced earlier without the aerobic-deficit penalty a high-mileage athlete would risk by rushing.
Here's where it goes wrong if you try to shortcut this logic. I've seen a masters athlete try to compress a 65 mpw plan into 30 mpw by cutting every session proportionally — same session count, same intensity distribution, just smaller numbers throughout. They burned out in specific prep, because intensity, not volume, had been under-adjusted. The mileage looked right on paper. The recovery demand from that much quality work at that frequency didn't match a 30-mile week.
A Worked Example: Season-at-a-Glance
Take the 25-32 mpw tier as a worked example across a 24-week season. Weeks 1-10 sit in build phase, climbing from around 27 to 32 miles as the trend. Weeks 11-16 shift into specific prep, trending down to the 24-28 range as intensity sharpens. Weeks 17-24 sit in race phase, settling into 20-24 miles with the sharpest, most race-specific sessions of the year. The mileage trend is downward throughout — the intensity trend runs the opposite direction.
Before you commit to a tier, it's worth confirming your speed clears the low-mileage gate — the framework only works if your raw speed supports it.
