What Is The Right Running Technique?

by Jacek
(Poland)

I have just started running and would love to start with the right technique.
How should my legs / feet work ?
How should I land on the ground ?

Thanks a lot.

Answer by Dominique:

Hi Jacek,

Thanks for your question.

The three most important things with regards to technique are probably:

  • Good posture. Run with your head straight up, and with a straight back. See this submission to the Running Training Helpline about running posture for more details.

  • Make sure when your feet land on the ground your heel lands first and your feet rolls on to the ground and off the ground again. This helps reduce the shock of the landing and therefore will help reduce the risk of injuries.

  • Move your arms along your body, not sideways in front of your body as this would hamper your speed and aerodynamics.

  • I hope this helps.

    Enjoy your running.

    Cheers,
    Dominique
