I have a high arch and I have really bad shin splints that I can't seem to get rid of!! I usually wear New Balance because they tend to fit my foot well. I never do well with Nike. I have tried physical therapy and I do the exercises and I still get shin splints. I really want to run again...any suggestions for a new running shoe? I want orthotics but they are $400!!
Answer by Dominique:
Hi Rob, Thx for your question about shin splints. You get shin splints because of excessive stress on the lower legs. It seems like you are doing the right things. It is important to do the right running stretches like heel drops and calf raises.
Shoes are such a personal thing, that it is almost undoable to provide you with usable advice...
When you have high arches you need neutral running shoes. You say that your favourite brand is New Balance. The New Balance 920 or the New Balance 904 are pretty popular neutral running shoes from New Balance.
When you keep on experiencing injury problems like you are, it would really pay off to go to a professional running store to get a pair of shoes perfectly fitted for you.
By the way, an article that I have heard runners be pretty positive about is the Pro Tec Shin Splint Compression Wrap. It helps reduce the symptoms of shin splints and helps you get back on track. Click here for more information.
Orthotics are pretty expensive, yes. You may want to try out these custom orthotics which are only $99,-.
I hope this has helped a little bit. Best of luck with the battle against shin splints! Kind regards, Dominique
