Half Marathon - Should I Run It or Not?

by Annette
(Dover)

Hi, I ran the Great North Run this year on the 18th Sept, but have not done any great distances since,6 miles max.

I'm thinking of doing a half marathon this Sunday (16th Oct) - would I be daft to attempt it, or do you think all the training I put in for the GNR will still be in me somewhere?

Thanks for your time.

Annette :-)

Answer by Dominique:

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your question about doing your half marathon in the upcoming weekend.

You have done the Great North Run a month ago. If I am not mistaken that is a half marathon as well.

I think the answer to this question is a bit dependent on how the Great North Run went.

Did you do well? Or did you only barely make it to the finish line?

Because all that built-up fitness before your race of last month is not going to go away overnight.

Assuming you did reasonably well in the race last month, and given you have done at least some running in the last month, you should be fine to finish the run.

You shouldn't expect to do as well as in the Great North Run, you will have lost some of your fitness. But I would hope that you'd still be able to finish the run.

Best of luck in the upcoming weekend! Let us know how you went afterwards by posting a comment to this query!
Kind regards,
Dominique

Thank you Dominique for getting back to me. I should have said, I did the GNR in 2hrs 5min - that was my personal best time at that point. I did the Maidstone Half on Sunday, it was glorious weather, albeit chilly, and came in at a very proud time of 2hrs 1min 53 seconds - I'm sooo chuffed and was glad I went for it - still chasing that sub 2 hours, maybe the next one. Kind regards Annette :-)

BEST RUNNING GEAR

When you are a runner, you are doing intervals. The Gymboss is a really clever and cheap piece of running gear that makes interval running a lot more comfortable. Check out the Gymboss review to find out why.
