More detail about the different elements

Part I: The Aerobic Cross Country Training Model for the Summer and Fall

This part is about base running. Base running is absolutely essential. Every runner needs to build a strong aerobic base first in order to have a successful racing season.

Cross Country TrainingIn this part coach Christensen explains just how important the aerobic base is.

He also covers the different types of runs and why you do them.

And he provides testing methods to determine the speed at which your pupils should run.

He also provides a typical two-week training block to fit it all together.

Part II: The Application of Speed and Strength Training to the Training Model

Speed and strength training are the subject of part II. The aerobic base is important, but it needs to be topped up with anaerobic training to help runners get to optimal performace.

Coach Christensen provides a 9-day cycle with dedicated workouts to each day and he explains the scientific details about how the anaerobic training will help make your runners go faster.

In addition to this there are explanations about the importance of strength training and how to help make the foot muscles stronger, which can help with technique and speed improvement.

Part III: The Influence of the Peaking Period

Part III is about the point where it all comes together, the peak period. This period needs to be delicately managed to ensure the runners stay at peak performance.

Coach Christensen does a good job in laying out the fundamentals for this all-important phase with modified workouts, pointers about when to rest and when not to rest, etc.

Part IV: Psychological Issues, Inventories and Motivation

Part IV is about everything but the running. When dealing with young runners this is an important subject and one often ignored by other courses and/or books.

It's about motivation and lighting the fire in your athletes.

Coach Christensen provides a simple test/survey to do with your runners to understand where they are at; do they need more recovery time, are they doing alright? This section provides helpful tools to work with your young runners and help them progress.

What do I think about the course?

This is a useful course for the cross-country coach who wants to get his school to a higher level. What I like about it, is that it is complete and very targeted towards the cross-country running coach.

Coach Christensen provides a lot of scientific background and detail which helps understand why his approach works.

What to consider?

This course is provided in online video-format. In addition you get a powerpoint pack with all the slides. I would advise printing off the slides and then listening to the videos so you can add your own notes as you listen to the course.

Importantly, you also get access to coach Christensen himself. And if anything is unclear in the course, you can ask questions about the course via the members-section, a useful addition to a very solid course.
