Building a Base

by Patrick
(New Jersey)

If i can do the walking easily, and feel I may be able to, for example, skip to week 6 of the beginner program 30 minutes in 3 months, would that be ok?

I've always ran until my shin splints stopped me a year and a half ago, and I can still run 15 minutes with energy left. Would it still be beneficial, in your opinion, that I should build a base starting from walking first?

Answer by Dominique:
Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your question about Beginners Running Program 3.

Everybody is different. The beginner running programs are designed for success for as many people as possible. And that includes people who have never run before or can't go for very long.

No general running program, like this one, is appropriate for each and everyone. So, it is definitely okay to "cheat" and start off in week 6 if you feel that is more suited to your level.

When you do that and you feel you struggle, just be flexible enough to go back a week. So don't be a hero and push on. Especially with a history of shin splints you will want to take it easy with the build up.

Also see my page about increasing mileage safely, which gives you some general guidelines if you feel that you want to make some more jumps in the running program.

Hope this helps.
Great to see you back on the roads and hope you stay injury free this time.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Dominique
