Advanced Marathoning
by Jack
A really good marathon training book is Advanced Marathoning. I got it before I started training for the New York Marathon last year. I had done a few 10k runs and a half marathon without any real structured training, but I figured I needed to get some specialist advice for my marathon. I got some other books as well, but the one I really liked and relied on was Advanced Marathoning.
There are a few things I really like about the book:
1) It is complete. It covers training, but also diet, hydration, cross training, injuries etc.
2) It is down-to-earth. These guys know you are working during the day, that sometimes you can't do the training you are prescribed to do, that you sometimes like to indulge in beer+pizza etc.
3) It is written by experts. Pete Pfitzinger is not just your Average Joe, he has done marathons at the highest level, he knows what he is talking about.
4) Training templates. I like the templates. They gave me a lot of guidance in how to structure my training.
I did my marathon on a maximum mileage of 60 miles. The training was hard work, but it paid off. With a 3.32 time I beat my original goal (before I started training) of a 4hr marathon. I feel I have taken my training to a higher level. I have since beaten my 10k PR and am now preparing for a half marathon in June, already knowing that I will get a PR there as well (if I don't get injured of course).
It is a really good book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to run a marathon and wants to prepare for it seriously.
Addition by Dominique:
Jack, thanks for the book review. I agree, Advanced Marathoning is a great marathon running training book.
