RUNNING TIP OF THE MONTH : Soccer vs Running
My soccer season has just come to an end.
It's
been great. My team did not fare that well, but in an all deciding last
game we beat the team at the top of the ladder and only just avoided
relegation to the division below.
Even though during the soccer
season my long distance running training partly stops, it is not to say
that soccer is bad for your running.
A new study has found that a friendly game of soccer burns more calories and builds up
more muscles than going for a run.
Also,
when comparing the soccer players to the runners, Danish scientists
found that soccer players felt less tired after exercising than the
joggers, because they were having more fun.
I have to note though that this study was only done for a limited
period of time (the study went for twelve weeks). Soccer can be quite
intense with many short sprints.
More
studies have shown that in the short run, intense exercise like that
will lead to better fitness than long distance running. However, over a
longer period of time, your long distance running does not improve with
intense exercise anymore.
Why?
Read Hadd's book and you know why. Base is everything for the long distance runner.
I am going to leave you for know. I am going to pick a goal race for in
about four months, preferably a half marathon and set up my training
program tonight.
I'll leave you with LaShawn's quote, a great reply when you ever get
asked why you run :
Don't ask me why I run. Ask yourself why you don't.
